Theater challenges us to empathize with the most desperate, despicable and bold characters. When we do this, we grow. We learn that, if the safe circumstances of our own lives were to shift, we might find ourselves doing and saying the most unforgivable things. Theater shows us that, improbably, we can do this and still hope to be loved.
